Vesic said for TV Kurir that there were 2.8 million cars in Serbia, whereas in 2012, there had been 1.8 million, which means that a million new vehicles had been registered in slightly over 10 years. Of the 2.8 million vehicles, 560,000 have old engines, Euro 1, Euro 2, or Euro 3, and those are the biggest polluters, the minister pointed out.
– That is why we have envisaged to invest, from January 1, 2024, a total of EUR 102 million in the replacement of 140,000 vehicles. The state is providing a subsidy of EUR 2,100 for the replacement of a passenger car, EUR 2,500 for light cargo vehicles and EUR 2,900 for a bus – Vesic specified.
The owner hands over the old vehicle to the state, which then recycles it in line with all the regulations.
– The owner of a deregistered car can buy a car which is not older than January 1, 2015, and which has to have a Euro 6 engine. That is why I am inviting citizens to use this opportunity and to reduce pollution – Vesic said.
He added that the project of deregistration, that is, the replacement of diesel vehicles with old engines, was handled the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
– We will open the contest this year and we will start the payments on January 1, 2024. Citizens can buy used or new cars. We want to reduce the pollution and we will continue this project in order to help replace all the old vehicles, all to the end of protection and improved air quality – Vesic said.
