Trains will no longer stop at the border? - Joint railway stations with Macedonia, Montenegro and Hungary are planned

The Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Goran Vesic, announced joint railway stations with North Macedonia, Montenegro and Hungary, which will, as he stated, significantly accelerate the traffic of passengers and goods.

- We will have a common freight railway station, so trains will no longer stop at the border, but inspections will be carried out in Tabanovci. In mid-May, in Bijelo Polje we will open a joint railway station with Montenegro, so that trains will no longer stop at the border, but we will have a customs and police station in Bijelo Polje, both Serbian and Montenegrin, and everything will be done at one place - said Vesic.

He said, in a guest appearance on EuroNews, that a similar agreement was made with Hungary. The joint railway station would be in Szeged for the Szeged-Subotica train, which, as he said, departs in October. Customs and passport control will be carried out in Szeged, and from there the train will enter the territory of Serbia without stopping.

Vesic stated that the high-speed railway between Belgrade and Budapest will be completed in 2025 and added that we will complete our section of the railway by 2024.

- We have completed 75 kilometers to Novi Sad, and now we are constructing 108 kilometers between Novi Sad and Subotica. When we finish our part of the high-speed railway, the Hungarians will finish their 150 kilometers in 2025, the trial period will last for six months and the high-speed railway between Belgrade and Budapest will commence operations - said Vesic.

He stated that it takes 35 minutes to get from Belgrade to Novi Sad, that it will take 1 hour and 12 minutes to reach Subotica, and about three hours to Budapest. He agreed with his Hungarian counterparts that the border crossings should be at railway stations.

- They will be located in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Subotica and Budapest, which means that when the train departs from Belgrade, there is no passport control and the passengers will enter straight into downtown Budapest - said Vesic.
