The eKapija investment team has recently done an analysis and formed a rank list of investments and investment ideas that attracted the greatest attention of eKapija users in 2013. The results are very interesting, some are expected, but there is a plenty of surprises, which is why we have decided to share this information with you.

We present you the most interesting projects in the category of TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND IT.

The colorful "world of buttons" always has something new to offer, which is why our list of projects is so varied. All sorts of stories are there - topping the list are three foreign companies (Mubadala from the UAE, Indians in Indjija, and Intel from the USA) closely followed by three new TV stars (Nova, Kanal 3, N1), Nano Centar, NCR's plans in Serbia, electronic tax returns, postal center in Zemun...

However, there's one impression that can't be escaped: despite the fact that brilliant local software and hardware companies represent the heart of IT business in Serbia, eKapija readers were attracted by "big stories" about national projects. All these projects are very important, but the information-communication system in Serbia will continue to develop in its own way with or without them.

The Emirates and their plans definitely marked the previous year in Serbia across all industries. The famous Mubadala, thus, tops our list of the most interesting projects in 2013. Our readers followed every step of this company towards the future chip factory, from the first announcements of its construction to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. This document concerns only the first phase of the project – construction of a research and development center as a predecessor to the chip factory and an aircraft parts production facility. Although the rumor had it late last year that the Government pinned the biggest hopes on Mubadala of all the UAE companies, we are yet to find out when the construction of this chip factory will start and whether chips will really become Serbia's oil.

The second place in 2013 goes to the IT park in Indjija, the same as the year before. Over the past year, Indians have been working at full steam in Srem to finish the first phase of the future "Silicon Valley" in Serbia. First tenants are expected to move in by the spring, and among them will most certainly be Schnider Electric DMS, one of the leaders in the field of smart networks and infrastructure.

The announcement of new cooperation between ComTrade and Intel - production of Serbian mobile phones and tablets based on Intel's hardware platform ranks third on our list.

Serbia also got three new TV stations last year - Nova, Kanal 3, and N1, which rank fourth on eKapija's 2013 list. Nova started broadcasting partially in mid-December, but the official TV program won't start until February. Kanal 3 (which is now available only to the citizens of Belgrade and Novi Sad) still negotiates with cable operators, while the info channel N1 is going to be launched in April.

(Nano Centar)

A big attention of our readers in 2013 was also attracted by the "Belgrade space ship" – the future "Nano Centar", which ranks fifth on the list. The mission of this institution will be to provide and maintain capital equipment for the implementation of science, research and technology projects in the field of nanoscience, new materials, physics, chemistry... Nano Centar Srbija, the company that will be managing that center, was established last year. Now we need to wait for the most important thing - a good news from the site, the noise produced by construction machines and the buzz of workers building the new temple of science.

Last year's No.1 ranks sixth this year. NCR Center in Belgrade has made a significant progress over the last year. It now employs 700 people and plans to double that number in 2014! If you are fluent in English and at least one more language, you can try your luck here. NCR is the world's leading manufacturer of ATMs and different banking solutions, and its center in Belgrade provides high-tech and professional assistance to companies across various industries.

New year, new rules for tax returns. Businessmen have been preparing for electronic tax returns for a long time, and this story is the seventh on our list for the last year.

Financial troubles of contractors put on hold the construction of long-awaited Main Postal Center in Zemun, and our readers were worried that about 30,000 square meters of office space would be left to ruin. This story ranks eighth on our list. In the meantime we've heard some optimistic forecasts that the Main Postal Center will open its doors in March 2014. We shall wait and see.

PayPal finally arrived in Serbia in 2013! For the time being, we can only pay for things using this service. PayPal's arrival ranks ninth on the 2013 list.

The tenth-ranked story is among the most positive ones in the entire IT sector in Serbia. MikroElektronika, a local company whose director Nebojsa Matic won the Blic Entrepreneur of the Year Award, is constantly growing. They are not asking the state for help, they are not complaining about the crisis, they don't whine about poor business conditions. They – work. The new center of this company that produces software and hardware tools for microcontrollers will bring back the old glory to the complex of Beogradska Elektronska Industrija in Zemun. eKapija will soon visit them at their new address, so you can expect more interesting stories in the near future!

Take a look at the complete ranking list of investments in TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND IT and compare it with your own opinions, expectations and assessments.
