Golija Spatial Plan envisages 5 major dams and 15-20 small hydroelectric power plants

(the Studenica river)

The area of Golija mountain has a significant waterpower and hydro energy potential that is not used at all. The Golija Spatial Plan and the Waterpower Basis of the Republic of Serbia have established an obligation to reserve a space on the territory covered by the Spatial Plan for the following facilities:

- two dams to be built until 2021: Rokci on the Nosnica river, and Preprana on the Studenica river (as backbones of a multipurpose waterpower and hydro energy system);

- the dam Vucinice on the Ljudska river in the given period;

- two dams: Kumanica on the Moravica river, and Gradac on the Gradacka river in the period after 2021;

- construction of several small hydroelectric power plants, which would improve the situation in the electric energy sector of the area, with the possibility of delivering part of energy to the power supply system of the Republic.

Running waters in drainage basins of the rivers Studenica and Moravica, as well as of other smaller tributaries, have a high discharge level even at the time when water flow is low, which is why they are declared as protected water resources of national and regional importance.

Subterranean waters also represent a valuable potential, insufficiently examined, which is mainly used to supply water to individuals.

It is also possible to build a big number of small dams in the area in order to solve some local problems, such as protection from floodwater, irrigation, formation of fish ponds, recreation, and they can also be utilized for energy purposes - small hydroelectric power plants: between 15 and 20 sites.

Basic socioeconomic characteristics of the area (size of the population, types of settlements, type and size of businesses) determine the basis for the assessment of current needs of the population, which amount to about 400,000 cubic meters per year, with the average specific consumption of 80 l per capita per day.
