According to the study that Gradska Toplana Nis (City Heating Plant Nis) has prepared in cooperation with the Faculty of Mining and Geology, below Nis, at a depth of 1,200 meters, there is a geothermal lake of 61 square kilometers, says the director of Toplana, Predrag Milacic.

In order to confirm this, an exploratory borehole should be established, and Milacic expects them to get financial support for it. The expected water temperatures are 51 to 71 degrees. If that exploratory borehole confirms the accuracy of the study and the assumption, the water can be used for the production of heating energy, but also for agriculture, a whole range of plastic greenhouses, spa centers and for medicinal purposes.

– That is a serious development opportunity for Nis, especially in the north part in whose proximity new settlements and the expansion of the city are planned – points out the director of Toplana Nis.

The two parts of the borehole would be established near the rail station in Donji Matejevac and near Somborski Blvd.

– At the moment, a detailed feasibility study is being done, which should end with the project documentation, so that the procurement procedure could begin. The expected value of the construction of the facility is EUR 13.5 million and that facility will reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by 1,200 tons a year – said Milacic.

He explains that the idea was for the heat pump to use the water from the Nisava.

– In the first phase, it will use water from the Nisava, but that project will be fully green when we start producing electrical energy for the facility from solar panels. The designing of a solar field which would be located here, which would secure the electricity for powering that heat pump, is already planned – explains Milacic.

Another project that is being planned has to do with the use of the future facility for the treatment of waste waters. As the director of Toplana explains, the idea is to use treated water with the help of the large-capacity heat pump to also heat the future settlement which is supposed to be built there in the area of the former Vulkan.
