Reconstruction of Serbian part of Belgrade-Bar Railroad to cost EUR 1.5 to 2 billion

The minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic, stated today that the reconstruction of the Serbian part of the Belgrade-Bar Railroad would cost EUR 1.5 to 2 billion and reminded that Serbia and Montenegro had agreed to jointly apply at the European Commission (EC) for financial support for the renewal of that railroad. Vesic, who yesterday signed the Joint Letter on said railroad to the EC with the minister of transport of Montenegro, Maja Vukicevic, expects the EC to recognize the importance of that project within the Western Balkans Growth Plan.

– We have reconstructed a part of the railroad, from Resnik to Valjevo, and it remains to reconstruct another 210 kilometers in Serbia, from Valjevo to Vrbnica, whereas Montenegro is supposed to renew 160 km of its section. In Serbia, the reconstruction will cost EUR 1.5 to 2 billion, which we will know when the tender is completed – he said for TV Happy.

He said that the reconstructed Belgrade-Bar railroad would be designed for 120 km/h, but that, on certain sections, trains would run at 80 km/h.

Vesic added that, in the same way, together with North Macedonia, Serbia had requested funds from the EU for the reconstruction of the Brestovac-Skopje railroad, whereas, with Bosnia and Herzegovina, the reconstruction of the Belgrade-Sarajevo had been agreed in a similar way.

– We are trying to strengthen regional cooperation and establish connections with our neighbors – the minister emphasized.
