Framework agreement for lot 1 of first phase of first line of Belgrade Subway signed – Subway tunnel to be dug through only from 2026

The Framework Agreement on the Realization of the Project of the Construction of the Belgrade Subway (lot one of the first phase of the first line), which encompasses the preparation of projects and the execution works, including the preparatory activities for the procurement of tunnel-boring machines (TBMs), has been signed by the ministry of construction, transport and infrastructure and representatives of the PUC “Belgrade Metro and Train”, the Secretariat for Public Transport of the City of Belgrade and the Chinese company Power Construction Corporation of China. The value of the agreement is RSD 2.4 billion (around EUR 20.4 million).

Minister Goran Vesic assures that, as soon a next year, the works on the first four stations will begin and that Mirijevo will have entrances to the first and second subway lines.

– It is not possible to connect all the parts of the city by subway, only the most important ones. With the subway, you are tracing the directions of the development of the city, because, where the subway stations are is where the city develops and where it is built more – estimated Vesic.

He adds that there is no European city the size of Belgrade which doesn’t have a subway and that it is high time that the Serbian capital got this rail subsystem.

– We will build the first two lines, and the tender for the designing of the third one was opened recently. On the first line, between Zeleznik and Mirijevo, a trip will take 32 minutes. We will have 41 three-part trains and a total of 21 stations. Between Mirijevo and Bezanija, a trip will take 39 minutes with 40 trains and 24 stations, and between Bezanija and Banjica, on the third line, a trip will take 38 minutes with 27 three-part trains – Vesic announces.

He also announced that the subway would be financed partially from the budget and partially from a loan.

– We have made the decision to finance one part of the works directly from the budget so as to be able to do it more quickly. We are preparing the documentation for the first two TBMs, which are popularly known as “moles”, which will dig through the tunnel tubes. We can start this job in 2026, because the building of these machines takes longer than one year – he said.

Let us remind that, in February this year, talking about the subway, Vesic said that three subway stations would be built in 2024 and that, in 2025, the boring of the tunnel for line 1 would begin. He added at the time that, in 2025, aboveground works and shallow excavations on a section of line 1 would begin and that one tunnel boring machine would start working near Bele Vode and the other near the Pancevo Bridge.

– As soon as 2025, the excavation of the tunnels with TBMs is to begin, as are the preparatory works for Line 2. In 2026, there will be excavation works with machines, so, it will progress a lot and we are beginning to build all the stations on Line 1 and the preparatory works for the stations on Line 2 are beginning – Vesic said at the time.
