Durres Port Authority (DPA), the operator of Albania's largest port, announced on Tuesday that it has issued a tender for the first phase of construction of a new port in the Porto Romano area northwest of Durres, where existing cargo handling operations will be relocated.
The budget for the first phase of the project is estimated at 39.3 billion lek (392 million EUR), according to the DPA's tender announcement.
Tender offers can be submitted until September 16.
Dutch engineering firm Royal HaskoningDHV, which led the design of the project, will also oversee the tender process, Albanian Infrastructure Minister Belinda Balluku said at a news conference.
As many as 15 international companies have already expressed their interest in the tender.
The first phase of the project includes the construction of a container terminal, breakwater, access roads and other supporting infrastructure, Royal HaskoningDHV's director of maritime business development Eric Smit told at a press conference.
In the initial phase, the new container terminal will use mobile port cranes. Later, as port activity increases, it can switch to ship-to-shore and rubber tire gantry cranes without additional infrastructure work, according to the announcement by RoyalHaskoningDHV.
