What is happening with the new thermal power plant in Kostolac? – EPS commissions supervision over construction of thermal block B3, checking dynamics and quality of works

Elektroprivreda Srbije has opened the tender for expert supervision over the execution of the works on the construction of the Thermal Power Plant and Mines (TE KO) Kostolac.

According to the technical specification of the tender, the expert supervisor is to control the meeting of the obligations under the agreement of the contractor, and it especially encompasses: controlling whether the construction is done according to the building permit and the main project, whether the adopted dynamics of the works and the deadlines are complied with, controlling and checking the quality of the execution of the works and whether there is proof of the quality of the materials, equipment and the installations.

It is pointed out that the deadline for the execution of the services may not be longer than a year from the signing of the agreement.

Let us remind that the construction of Block B3, worth USD 618 million, is the biggest investment of EPS in the past 30 years, and the last thermal power plant in Serbia was built in Kostolac – the thermal block B2, which was put into operation back in 1991.

The agreement on the construction of Block B3 was signed by the Government of Serbia and EPS with the Chinese company CMEC back in 2013. The works began five years later, and since then, the deadline for their completion has been extended several times.

The most recent announcement of the commissioning of this block of 350 MW was made in April by the minister of finance, Sinisa Mali, who said at the time, after his conversation with the representatives of the Chinese company, that there were efforts toward accelerating the works.

Before that, the new block was synchronized with the network and further tests and the plan for test operations were announced, and the then minister of energy announced that B3 would be put into operation “in the coming months.”
