Japanese JICA now formally part of RHPP Bistrica project – Preparatory works announced for next year

Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović stated that official confirmation had been received that the government of Japan had formalized the decision on the participation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the construction of the Reversible Hydro Power Plant (RHPP) Bistrica, the ministry announced.

She spoke with Chief Representative of the JICA office in the Balkans Masahiro Ueki about the financing and construction of that hydro power plant.

The Minister stated that this hydroelectric power plant, with a capacity of 628 megawatts, was important for energy balancing and storage, especially for the provision of sufficient electricity in the coming period, adding that the preparation of technical documentation would be completed by the end of that year, so that preparatory works could begin the next year.

Masahiro Ueki expressed the wish for the cooperation of Serbia and Japan in the energy sector to continue successfully in the coming period, especially due to the great importance of the RHPP Bistrica for the security of the supply and the decarbonization of the energy sector in Serbia.

At the meeting, it was confirmed that the Preliminary Design and the Feasibility Study had been completed and that the preparation of the spatial plan of the special-purpose area, the environmental impact assessment study and the study of the protection of immovable cultural goods for the RHPP Bistrica project was in progress.

The project, as said, is an integral part of the program “Leap into the Future – Serbia 2027”.
