The company Srbijavoz has in its fleet 21 of the most modern Swiss so-called flirt train, which has been in use since 2015, and a new series of 18 trains will be released into traffic starting from May, and by the end of the year they will all be delivered and put into traffic, Ivan Bulajić, Acting General Director of Srbijavoz, announced in an interview for Bloomberg Adria.

- These are classic trains for speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, but they are fourth generation trains and are more modern than the existing ones, they cost 112 million EUR and are financed through an EBRD loan. This is a significant increase in our fleet - said Bulajić.

He announced that five Chinese high-speed trains will also be delivered to Serbia during the next year.

- Last week in China, I attended the presentation of the first high-speed train that was completely finished and will be delivered to Serbia. With the contract signed last year with the Chinese, we secured five high-speed trains, so they will be delivered and put into traffic during the next year - he said.

He added that there are other investment projects related to the acquisition of eight locomotives.

- The total investment is around 200 million EUR. That is a serious amount for 18 Swiss and five Chinese trains, plus eight locomotives - he says.

He also emphasizes that Chinese trains meet European standards.

- China is at the very top of the world, as far as the technology of not only the production of trains but also the construction of railways is concerned. I rode their train, which develops a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, in luxury and quality that I have not seen in Western Europe. As for the quality, I have no doubt that these trains are of exceptional quality. When it comes to compatibility with the railway, there is a difference between our and Hungarian networks in the contact network, that is, in the power supply source. Their contact network requires that the pantograph, the device that collects current from the network, be of a different width than is the case here. That's why when we were writing the specification for Chinese trains (it's usual for a train to have two pantographs and be of the same width), we asked for a train with four pantographs where two will be for the Hungarian width and two for our width, so that the trains we are ordering will be able to run on another network without any problems - said Bulajić.

He states that the trains, which are planned for the Belgrade-Budapest route, are fully compatible with the infrastructure of both Hungary and Serbia.

He also explains that Chinese trains are considerably cheaper.

- We paid about EUR 57 million for three double-decker Swiss trains (Soko high-speed train), and now we are buying five Chinese trains for slightly less than that amount. The price difference is about 40%. It is true that the double-decker capacity is greater, but if you look at the seats, those trains are certainly 20 to 30% cheaper than the Soko trains - he says.
