The Thermal Power Plant “Nikola Tesla” (TENT) is the fourth biggest emitter of carbon-dioxide among the power plants in Europe. With as much as 16.98 million tons of emitted CO2 in 2022, when it comes to emissions, TENT is comparable to thermal power plants in economies far bigger than Serbia – in Russia, Poland and Germany.

With 5.59 million tons of CO2 emissions in 2022, the Thermal Power Plant “Kostolac” is also among the 50 biggest emitters in Europe (of course, talking about power plants), having placed 33rd.

Ahead of TENT are only the thermal power plants Belchatow and Kozienice in Poland and the thermal power plant Neurath in Germany; in addition to them, the Russian power plants Reftinskaya and Surgut-2 (which is also the second biggest natural-gas power plant in the world) are bigger emitters than TENT, but geographically, they are nevertheless in the Asian part of Russia, writes the Klima101 portal.

These data on emissions have been published within its online database by the international organization Climate Trace, which dramatically enlarged its global map of the emitters of CO2 and equivalent harmful gases at the beginning of December 2023. The map can be accessed for free by all users.

It is important to note that Neurath was close to being shut down in the spring of 2022, but has continued working due to the energy crisis; according to the current plans, it will be finally closed as soon as March 2024.

On the other hand, Poland plans to close its biggest thermal power plants by 2036. In other words, if TENT continues working without a change in the coming years, it could become the biggest emitter of carbon-dioxide among the power plants on the Old Continent.
