The state secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Youth, Uros Kandic, stated yesterday that the number of two million foreign guests in Serbia would be exceeded for the first time in 2023.

At the SITCON conference, organized by the Singidunum University, he said that, thanks to the foreign guests, whose numbers in the current year were one fourth higher compared to the previous year, 2023 would be another record-setting year for the tourism of Serbia.

The data of the Central Information System in the fields of hospitality and tourism, according to Kandic, show that there were more foreign than local guests, which was one of the best parameters of the growth of the tourism sector at that moment.

Talking about the hospitality industry, he said that 2023 had been marked by the full reconstruction of several old hotels and their opening throughout Serbia “with serious accommodation capacities, which were dilapidating for years.”

– In addition to the fact that, in the past ten years, the number of hotels in Serbia has grown by 120, and in the past five, by 50, the most important effect has been achieved in the raising of the quality of the accommodation capacities – pointed out the state secretary.

He illustrated this with the data that the share of hotels with four and five stars in the total hotel capacities in the 2012-2022 period had grown from 25% to 44% and that the share of the lowest-category hotels had dropped from 42% to 20%.

Kandic also announced that the 2024 budget for tourism infrastructure would be 33% higher than in 2023 and amount to close to RSD 2.5 billion, of which as much as RSD 1.5 billion was meant for capital projects.

Kandic said that the budget for tourism infrastructure would be 3.3 times higher in 2024 compared to 2019, when RSD 750 million had been set aside for that purpose.
