Considering the dynamics of the trade margins in retail chains in Serbia, there is room for them to be lowered without jeopardizing the functionality of commerce, said Jorgovanka Tabakovic, the governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS).

Tabakovic said that, in the five biggest retail chains in Serbia, they charged the suppliers for entry to the facility and the placement of goods so that the consumers can see them, while not complying with the deadlines for the payment for goods, and added that it was therefore no wonder that examples such as watermelons being sold from a tractor trailer in Dedinje could be seen.

She said that she couldn’t advise the inspection what to do and invited everybody, including the retail chains, to be responsible, and the Commission for Protection of Competition to do an analysis of the growth of the trade margins.

She pointed out that the NBS couldn’t affect the margins and recommended to the consumers to pay attention to where they would buy edible oil or some other product.
