The Government of Serbia has sent to the National Assembly for adoption the draft amendments to the Law on Road Traffic Safety. The members of the parliament will discuss them in September, but the public is already talking about them – mostly due to the new penalties.

In the Draft Law on 118 pages, the most read part is the one about the 18 traffic violations due to which the driver, if punished twice in two years, can even lose the vehicle.

– This pertains to driving under the influence of alcohol, with over 1.2 per mil of alcohol, speeding outside populated areas for 80 km/h, in populated areas for over 70 km/h, in traffic-calmed zones for over 50 km/h, overtaking a row of vehicles, whereby a row of vehicles means three or more vehicles, overtaking vehicles that have stopped in order to let pedestrians pass and so on – said Mirko Kokovic of the Traffic Safety Agency.

The new feature is that electric scooters are, for the first time, defined as vehicles, as are the conditions under which they can take part in the traffic. It is also proposed for the age limit for truck and bus drivers to be lowered – which, they hope, would also reduce their shortage in the country. The plan is to regulate the field of old-timers and change the traffic signalization.
