Stricter Conditions for Producers and Operators of Waste Management

The minister of environmental protection of Serbia, Irena Vujovic, has stated that the main goal of the amendments to the Law on Waste Management is to proscribe stricter conditions that producers of waste and operators of waste management need to meet, both before and during the carrying out of their activities, according to the website of the Government of Serbia.

The most important amendments pertain primarily to adopting the legal basis for regulating the field of the management of waste from construction and demolition, which, due to its size and volume, requires special management in terms of separation, collection, transport, storage and treatment, the minister explained.

According to her, one of the amendments pertains to the adoption of the legal basis which will regulate, in more detail, the manner of handling waste oil from facilities for the treatment of municipal waste waters and enable the realization of the program of waste management through the defining of the further use, treatment and disposal of waste sludge.

Vujovic noted that another innovation was the introduction of financial guarantees for all waste management activities, but such as would fully implement the principle of responsibility of the owner of the waste after the shutting down of the facility or bankruptcy proceedings, so that waste management would be solved with the activation of the financial guarantee.

The proposed solutions, as she pointed out, will not have a negative impact on business entities, but contribute to a more efficient implementation of the regulations.
