A Step Closer to Construction of Highway Through South Banat – Preparation of Spatial Plan for Traffic Route from Pancevo to Border with Romania to Begin

The Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina has adopted the Decision on the preparation of the spatial plan of the special-purpose area of the infrastructure corridor of the highway E-70, section Pancevo-Vrsac-border crossing with Romania (Vatin).

For the purposes of the preparation of the Spatial Plan and the Environmental Impact Assessment Report, RSD 36.1 million has been set aside from the budget of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, and the deadline period for the preparation of the draft is six months.

According to the website of the City of Vrsac, the area covered by this spatial plan encompasses the cadaster municipalities within the units of local self-government of the cities of Pancevo and Vrsac, as well as the municipalities of Kovin, Alibunar and Plandiste, and it spreads on around 980 square kilometers.

The initiative for the preparation of this spatial plan was launched by the PE Roads of Serbia, based on the already prepared Prefeasibility Study with the General project of the highway E-70 for the Pancevo-Vrsac-state border section.

The technical documentation was prepared by the CIP Institute from Belgrade, and the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure gave a positive report.

The continuation of the preparation of the technical documentation for this road route is planned for this year.

After the completion, the Draft Spatial Plan will be put up for public inspection for 30 days in Vrsac, Pancevo, Kovin, Alibunar, Plandiste and the Provincial Secretariat for Urban Planning and Environmental Protection in Novi Sad.

Let us remind that, when the PE Roads of Serbia opened the tender for the preparation of the Prefeasibility Study with the General Project of the E70 highway Pancevo-Vrsac-Romanian border in September 2021, it was said that the future route of the highway was the continuation of the future bypass route around Belgrade (Dobanovci-Ostruznica-Bubanj Potok-Vinca-Pancevo) and that it would be the shortest road connection of Romania, through Serbia and Montenegro, with Corridor X and south Italy and Albania, that is, with the Mediterranean basin.

In the internal traffic system, the highway will connect the economy of south Banat with Belgrade, central regions of Serbia, Montenegro and the Port of Bar.

The agreement on the construction of the Belgrade-Timisoara highway was signed in mid-2022 in Timisoara by the minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Tomislav Momirovic, and the minister of transport and infrastructure of Romania, Sorin Mihai Grindeanu, as announced on the portal of the Government of Serbia.

The parties to the agreement, as said, will establish a connection between the two states by directly connecting the Belgrade-Vatin (state border) highway, which will be 65 kilometers long, on the Serbian side and the Timisoara-Moravica (state border) highway, close to 78 kilometers long, on the Romanian side.

At the connection of the two highways, the parties to the agreement will build the border crossing in the territories of the two states.
