In a video message, European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson congratulated Bulgaria and Serbia for the beginning of the construction of the gas interconnection on the Bulgarian side as well, as said on the website of the Government of Serbia.
– This is an important moment in the current situation, since both countries, but also the entire region, will be able to diversify the gas supply sources and enable a stable supply to consumers, as well as to reduce dependence on Russian gas – she pointed out.
According to her, this is also an important step for the whole region, which is why the European Commission supported the project.
The length of the intersystem gas connection "Bulgaria-Serbia" (IBS) in Serbia will be 109 km, and the total length of the two-way gas pipeline through both states is 170 km, from Novi Iskar near Sofia to Nis. The gas pipeline has a capacity of 1.8 billion cubic meters of gas a year and is a project of mutual interest for the EU.
According to the estimate of the European Investment Bank (EIB), the total value of the gas interconnector Nis-Dimitrovgrad-Bulgaria is EUR 85.5 million, of which the EIB secures EUR 25 million through a loan, EUR 49.6 million is provided as a grant from the European Union’s IPA funds, whereas the rest of the costs will be covered from the budget of Serbia and the PE Srbijagas’ own funds.
The main contractor is Glavbolgarstroy, and the works include the construction of the two-way main gas interconnector MG10 Nis-Dimitrovgrad in the territory of Serbia, between the neutral gas systems of Serbia and Bulgaria, as well as the construction of four measuring-regulation stations and accompanying structures.
The gas interconnection between the two countries is expected to be ready for operations in mid-2023.
The site was visited by the presidents of the two countries, Rumen Radev and Aleksandar Vucic.
