The construction and reconstruction of the sports infrastructure has been in full swing since 2020, and investments in this field are not letting up. You can learn more about this in out topic in focus “Construction and Reconstruction of Stadiums and Sports Halls in Serbia”.

From big projects, such as the Red Star Belgrade stadium and the national stadium, to the development of sports infrastructure in smaller places, such as Pozarevac or Novi Knezevac, attention is directed at improving the conditions for sports activities, from the youngest categories to the older ones.

The focus is on “the most important of the least important things in life” – football, but also on volleyball, athletics, swimming and shooting sports.

In the article before you, we have highlighted the 11 investments in this field that attracted the most attention from our readers in 2022.

1. Reconstruction of Rajko Mitic / Marakana Stadium

When it turns 60 on September 1, the famous Marakana stadium (since 2014, officially named Stadium “Rajko Mitic”), will most probably be demolished. From the current perspective, that is, due to the plans of Red Star Belgrade, according to which the construction of a new temple of football has been prepared for a long time now, that is the fate that awaits it.

The reconstruction of the stadium will cost around EUR 65 million, as announced back in June 2022 by the general director of the Red Star Belgrade football club, Zvezdan Terzic. According to the most recent information, the projection is that the new stadium will cost EUR 100 to 120 million.

The new Marakana, in addition to being moved to a lower location, will also have a smaller capacity than the current one – 42,000 seats.

2. National Stadium

The project of the construction of a national stadium was brought back into focus when Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced the beginning of the construction for 2021. At the time, it was also presented what the stadium would look like. According to the public insight into the draft spatial plan of special purpose area for the national football stadium in Surcin, the facility will have a capacity of up to 60,000 seats, a health center, a sports academy and a sports museum.

In March last year, the second phase of the preparation of the spatial plan for the National Football Stadium was announced.

In June last year, the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia published the public invitation for project management and expert supervision over the construction of the linear infrastructure for the purposes of the construction of the National Football Stadium in the territory of the city municipality of Surcin in Belgrade. The estimated value of the services is RSD 900 million.

3. Sports and Recreation Complex in Vracar

The City of Belgrade plans to build a sports complex in Vracar at 98 Juzni Blvd. The Sports Complex Vracar is designed as an indoor multifunctional sports hall with an outdoor pool and accompanying features. The plan is for the facility to have two basement levels and a ground floor.

4. Volleyball Training Center New Belgrade

In January last year, the Office for Public Investment Management awarded the job of the preparation of the technical documentation and the construction of the Volleyball Training Center in New Belgrade to a group of bidders led by the company Jadran from Belgrade. The value of the signed agreement is RSD 3.15 billion with the VAT, that is, around EUR 26.8 million.

The urban project envisages the construction of the Volleyball Training Center on 21,380 m2, along Tosin Bunar Street.

The complex of the Volleyball Training Center will consist of a training hall (three courts), a hall for sand volleyball (two courts), accommodation capacities for athletes, a medical center, a gym, offices in the function of sports and two garages.

5. Sports Center Senjak Valjevo

The City of Valjevo plans to build the Sports Complex Senjak, for which the tender for the preparation of the urban-technical documentation for the development of the project was published in August last year.

The construction is planned in the location of the current sports and recreation complex Senjak. The plan entails the construction of an indoor pool facility, a football field with artificial grass, a space for a running track and a facility for locker rooms and accompanying features, as well as the construction, that is, the reconstruction of the shooting range facility.

6. Sports Center Krusevac

The City of Krusevac opened the public presentation of the urban project for the construction of the Sports Center Lazarevski. The plan includes the construction of an inflatable sparts hall, a hospitality facility – café, a children’s playroom, an outdoor football field and a locker room next to the football field.

The parcel previously featured the buildings of the company Zadrugar.

7. Sports complex for preparations Zlatibor

The president of the municipality of Cajetina, Milan Stamatovic, presented the project according to which Zlatibor should get up to 20 outdoor and indoor sports courts this year. He also said that Zlatibor had the conditions for the accommodation of athletes and that it only needed the sports infrastructure.

– It will take around EUR 10 million for the construction of sports courts. So far, two courts have been finished, two are being built, and they will be built in phases – said Stamatovic.

He said that the next project was the construction of an indoor sports court for 8,000 spectators, where, as he emphasized, “we could expect European-level matches”.

He also announced the project of the construction of the “Gold City”, which will be located at the interstation of the gondola, where a golf course will be built.

8. Football Stadium Loznica

The construction of the new football stadium in Lagator in Loznica is being brought to a close and should be completed in April this year.


– This is a unique complex of the new recognizable stadium, sports courts, an Olympic-sized pool, a park space with courts for small sports, a track-and-field stadium under construction, which opens wide the door to the development of sports – said the mayor of Loznica, Vidoje Petrovic.

Let us remind that the look of the stadium was presented back in 2019, when it was revealed that the capacity would be 8,500 spectators.

9. Sports Hall Novi Knezevac

The agreement on the construction of a sports hall in Novi Knezevac was signed in October last year. This is a multi-year project worth RSD 638.7 million, which will be financed from the provincial budget. With the support of the Municipality of Novi Knezevac, a facility of 2,163 m2 with 450 seats will be built, which will have the conditions for the organization of tournaments.

The president of the Provincial Government, Igor Mirovic, recently stated that the construction of this sports hall would begin several days later.

10. City Stadium Pancevo

The City of Pancevo published the tender for the technical control of the technical documentation for the construction of a football stadium in November last year. These are projects for the construction permit. The capacity of the future stadium is 5,000 spectators, of which 40 seats are reserved for people with special needs.

The stadium is in line with the UEFA rules on stadium infrastructure for a 3rd category stadium. The estimated area of the stadium is up to 15,000 m2 of gross developed area. Additional commercial features, such as a fan shop, stores, a restaurant, a café bar, a gym and so on, need to be included in the stadium.

11. Track-and-Field Stadium Pozarevac

In September last year, a track-and-field stadium opened in Pozarevac, whereby the European Sports Week officially began. The construction cost RSD 110 million.

The construction of the track-and-field stadium began in November 2021 in Pozarevac. The track consists of six round lanes 400 meters long and eight straight tracks. The field features the runway for all jumpers (long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault) and the throwing disciplines (shot put, hammer, discus and javelin). The fields are positioned on green or tartan surfaces formed inside the track. A protective belt made of interlocking concrete pavers, one meter wide, is set up around the track. The stadium will meet the conditions for all national tournaments and some international ones.
