– We assure you that we will do our best to help you through this crisis – EC President told the press, announcing a support package of EUR 200 million.
The aid will consist of 100 million euros in grants and the same amount again in loans, starting January 1, in order to help Moldova “meet its gas needs this winter”.
An additional 50 million euros will help the country’s most vulnerable citizens, von der Leyen said. Moldova is officially an EU membership candidate, and EC President added that “European solidarity with the Republic of Moldova is unshakable.”
Moldova has been experiencing difficulties with gas supply for several weeks now, because it is entirely dependent on Russian gas, and it is also no longer getting electricity from Ukraine, due to the recent Russian attacks on the Ukrainian infrastructure.
– We are facing the worst energy crisis in three decades – said Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
The financial aid is an addition to an aid of EUR 840 million that the EU has provided to Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe, this year.
Despite the many challenges since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Moldova has taken in several hundred thousand refugees.
