The draft hydrogen strategy of Serbia will be presented to companies by the end of April, and they are expected to provide feedback and get involved in the preparation of that document, the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia announces. As they point out, our country wants to include this resource in our energy mix, which is an important segment for the reduction of greenhouse effect gases.

“Green” hydrogen in developed countries has application in industry, transport and energy, and one of the most present methods of obtaining it is electrolysis.

– Vehicles are charged through the technology of hydrogen fuel cells – explains Dusan Stokic from the CCIS. – With an energy efficiency of 40-60%, electrical energy is produced from it, whereas, in the combined production of electrical and heating energies, the efficiency is up to 80%.

He says that hydrogen is used in the gas network, from 1% of the volume in the Netherlands, to 10% in Germany. Serbia has certain resources for orienting to this energy source, but the infrastructure and the technologies are insufficiently developed.

– A certain amount of time needs to pass in order for the technologies to be developed in companies which have potential, such as the Pancevo Refinery and Elixir – says Stokic. – It is also important to look into what is required in terms of developing the capacities in the sense of workforce.

As an alternative fuel, “green” hydrogen has been recognized as a source of clean energy, which is experiencing a boom on a global level. Its production and use are expensive at the moment. The price of “green” hydrogen from electrolysis at the production spot is estimated at 3 to 7.5 euros per kilogram, or 90 to 225 euros per megawatt-hour. It is expected that, until 2030, the production cost will drop around 30% due to an increase in the capacities for energy from renewable sources.
