(Illustration) For more than four decades, the seepage waters from the old Vinca landfill, full of various toxins and chemicals, have been flowing into the Osljanski Potok and Osljanska Bara water bodies (a stream and a pond), and then into the Danube from there, constantly polluting it. It seems that this is now coming to an end, because the testing of the newly built facility for the treatment of landfill seepage should start soon.

By putting this facility into operation, according to Ivana Vilotijevic, the secretary for environmental protection, the decades-long ecological problem at the Vinca landfill will be solved.

– The beginning of the testing of the reliability of the facility for the treatment of seepage waters is at the same time the beginning of the second phase of the realization of the Agreement on the public-private partnership between the city and the French-Japanese consortium of SUEZ and I-Environment Investments (ITOCHU). This phase also entails the completion of the facility for the usage of municipal waste for energy purposes, the realization of which, according to the planned dynamics, is expected by the end of this year, when it is also planned to be put into operation – Vilotijevic says.

The facility for the treatment of waste and seepage waters is located below the old landfill and entails: a facility for the treatment of seepage waters using the method of reverse osmosis, a system for collecting and removing rainwater and seepage and landfill gas and pools for the collection of those waters. The plan is for the seepage from the old landfill, but also the new one, to flow into the first three pools and mix there, and to then be processed at facilities, so that class 2 water would then be let into the Danube. That is very important, because downstream from it is the Vinca settlement and the city facility for water treatment.

The capacity of the facility for the treatment of seepage is 90,000 m3 a year.

At the largest city landfill, there are also preparations ongoing and the plans are being prepared for the repair of the old garbage disposal site formed back in 1977, whose depth in certain spots reaches around a hundred meters.
