In the City of Belgrade, at 687 traffic intersections, pedestrian crossings and other structures, the traffic is regulated by traffic lights. Of that number 95% of these structures are of the surface character, and the city core alone, which covers the territories of the city municipalities, features 632 intersections where traffic is regulated by traffic lights.
Traffic jams and delays at intersection could become history fairly soon, as the City Administration has opened the tender for the upgrade of the functioning of the light signalization and the establishment of integrated operations of all systems of adaptable control in Belgrade.
According to the project task, the launching of this substantial project is being done because the current condition of the light signalization does not meet the real traffic needs.
– There is no possibility of a temporal setting of the functioning of the light signals depending on the immediate demands of the participants in the traffic system (pedestrians, public transport vehicles, cyclists, emergency service vehicles, passenger and cargo vehicles), or under the influence of the traffic demand in a wider traffic reference zone of a structure. In most cases, the light signalization has no option of giving priority to public transport vehicles and emergency service vehicles (fire engines, medical emergency vehicles and the police) – says the project task.
The project will cover 322 traffic structures in the central city area, where a centralized, remote-controlled system of light signalization will be established.
– The implementation of modern systems for controlling traffic flows, such as systems for adaptable management of light signalization, which continues within this procurement, creates the conditions for the raising of the degree of the utilization of the existing capacities of the street network and their flexible adaptation to the traffic demands in real time, with a simultaneous increase in the safety of the users and a reduction of the negative impact of motorized traffic on the environment – the project task adds.
According to the intentions of the City Administration, the establishment of modern light signalization should meet several goals, from increased traffic safety, more efficient use of limited capacities, to promoting a greater use of public transport vehicles, which will be given an advantage when the new system of traffic lights is established.
The value of the tender is RSD 1,888,000,000, and the deadline for the application of interested bidders is December 15.
