The acting director of the PE Roads of Serbia, Zoran Drobnjak, said that the price of road toll on Serbian roads would probably not change in 2021, despite it being the lowest in the region.

Commenting on the allegations on the potential price increase, Drobnjak said for TV Tanjug that it was only in February that there was a small correction of 1% and that he would request a 5% increase for the next year.

– The road toll for the 220 kilometers between Belgrade to Nis costs RSD 1,000, which is EUR 8, whereas in the neighboring Croatia, it is EUR 20 for a roughly equal distance, and they raised it by at least 20% in the season – Drobnjak said.

He explained that the money from the road toll was used for the maintenance of traffic routes, not just highways, but local roads as well, which is a total of 15,750 kilometers.

The director of the PE Roads of Serbia also confirmed that, to the end of increasing the traffic safety, there were efforts toward a project of implementing road toll collection for trucks heavier than 12.5 tons on main roads, so that they would be redirected to highways.

– We have asked for trucks to pay road toll on main roads of first-grade roads for safety primarily, in order to reduce the number of deaths on the Ibar Main Road, because freight trucks can’t use this road, they should use the highway, and we are also working on a project of having cargo vehicles pay for the milage through a portal and electronic toll collection devices – Drobnjak explained.

He confirmed that an increased traffic intensity was recorded in the summer of 2021 and that nearly 780,000 vehicles went down Serbian highways the weekend before and that the overall toll revenues amounted to over RSD 390 million, which, he emphasized, only partly compensated for the losses from 2020 caused by the coronavirus.
