Central City Square Trg Galerija and Another Three Locations in Novi Sad to be Rearranged – International Contest Nova Mesta Opens

The central city square in Novi Sad, Trg Galerija (Gallery Square) and another three locations in the urban core of the city are the subject of the international architectural contest Nova Mesta (New Places), opened by the Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture Foundation and the Association of Novi Sad Architects.

According to the technical documentation for the recently opened tender, Trg Galerija is a location which brings together two museum-gallery institutions – the Gallery of Matica Srpska, the Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection and the Gallery of Fine Arts – Gift Collection of Rajko Mamuzic. Said location features a green area and a parking lot, and the contest envisages the turning of this space into a unified whole.

It is added that the location should be seen as a programmatically defined public city space, whose concept is defined by the fact that three city galleries face the square. In that sense, the programs that are already realized by these institutions, both indoors and outdoors, may be seen as the starting point for the development of the concept and the program. This especially pertains to the exhibition program, so the presence of the galleries’ programs in the square should be envisioned as well.

Also, the participants in the contest may consider pavilion structures that would be in the service of the galleries’ programs (workshops, forums etc.), an outdoor café seating area, a joint gift shop/gallery bookshop and similar features.

Other existing programs in the location, such as can be opened toward the square, may be considered as well (for example, the café bookstore), contributing to the quality of the square’s program.

The existing greenery in the square is to be kept for the most part. Since this is a public city space with facilities of remarkable architectural value, special focus is placed on street furniture, lighting and other elements related to spatial design.

In addition to Trg Galerija, the contest also envisages the development of the park near the building of the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, green areas in Patrijarha Pavla Street and the lookout area near the Freedom Bridge.

The value of the tender is RSD 1,800,000, and works may be submitted by August 24.
