COVID Passports in EU from July 1

The European Parliament had accelerated the legislative steps toward ensuring free movement during the COVID-19 pandemic. The deal with the Council took place two months after the Commission presented the proposal, so that the rules would come into effect before the summer season starts.

The certificate, which will be free, and can come in a digital or a paper form, proves that the carrier has been vaccinated, has recovered from the disease or has recently tested negative. The joint framework will enable all EU member states to issue certificates which will be interoperable, compatible, secure and confidential throughout the EU.

During the discussion scheduled for Tuesday, June 8, the members of the Parliament are expected to re-emphasize the necessity for available and financially affordable testing. They will also emphasize that the member states should not impose additional travel restrictions on the carriers of the certifications, such as quarantine, self-isolation, or testing, unless it is justified due to the needs of the public health, and they will call for the system to be implemented soon.

The voting on the draft laws will be held on Tuesday, and the results will be published on Wednesday morning. After the regulations are adopted at the plenary session, the Council will have to adopt them formally and publish them in the Official Journal before their implementation starts on July 1.

Croatia first to implement COVID Passports

Croatia was the first to implement COVID passports, and over 40,000 have been issued so far. Everything is functioning as it should at the border checkpoints, so there are no delays due to the checking of these passports. Also, foreign tourists are still recommended to fill out the form, that is, the application, at the Enter Croatia page, so that they would cross the border more quickly. Yellow lanes have been specially marked at the borders for guests who have applied through Enter Croatia.
