There are works on 24 locations along the future highway. Eight bridges are being built, the course of the river Morava is being moved, and there are also earthworks being carried out. The challenges are numerous, from the expropriation, through the pandemic, which has slowed down the works and the arrival of several hundred workers from India.
– Especially demanding is the section of the Morava Corridor through sectors 3 and 1, due to the moving of the utility installations, the gas pipeline, the waterworks, the powerlines and the installation of optical, telecommunication cables along the route of the highway. The challenge is great, because we are working in populated areas and plenty of people are hired for the job – said Vicknayson Thevendran, Project Manager at Bechtel Enka.
Of around 1,000 workers, which the Bechtel Enka consortium has hired for the construction of the corridor, two thirds are local workers. By September, another 1,400 people are expected to be hired.
– We need qualified construction workers, handlers of heavy machines, good craftsmen, technicians of various profiles, but also storage facility guards, cooks, janitors, the staff that will take care of the workers’ camp. Those interested can pick up applications at the National Employment Service, local communities and, soon, on our webpage as well – emphasized Don Ritchie, Human Resources Specialist at Bechtel Enka.
Close to Krusevac, on an area of 23 hectares, there’s a camp with around 60 facilities, offices, design studios, a laboratory, an outpatient clinic, a kitchen, dormitories and an area for rest and relaxation.
– The aim is to make the workers’ stay at the camp be as good and comfortable as possible. We have tables for table tennis, a pool table. We are planning to build a basketball court and a futsal court, gyms and a tennis court – said Nenad Marinkovic of the PR departments of Bechtel Enka.
At the camp which can take in over 1,400 people, there are currently around 300 workers from all continents, symbolically connecting the Morava Corridor with the world even before the completion of the highway.
