The Krsko Nuclear Power Plant and the terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG) on Krk were discussed by the Slovenian authorities with the American delegation led by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as confirmed for the Slovenian national TV by Infrastructure Minister Jernej Vrtovec.

– Slovenia needs a secure supply of gas and that is why it supports the LNG terminal on Krk, and if it wants to be energy independent, it needs a second block of the Krsko Nuclear Power Plant – said Vrhovec, as reported by Hina.

The minister and representatives of several Slovenian energy companies talked to the American delegation about deepening the cooperation in those fields, for the purpose of, as he said, strengthening the security of the supply and the diversification of energy sources.

– We talked about topics of strategic interest for Slovenia and the USA as our ally – the Slovenian minister said and emphasized that it was important for Slovenia not to depend on only one country when it comes to the supply of gas and other energy sources.

When it was pointed out that the gas from the LNG terminal on Krk would be more expensive than the gas from Russia that Slovenia buys from Gazprom, Vrtovec said that this had not been discussed with the American delegation.

Vrtovec said that, as the Krsko Nuclear Power Plant was built using western technology (Westinghouse), the cooperation with the USA was necessary, especially since Slovenia needs another block at the power plant, but he added that the final decision had not yet been made.
