Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said yesterday in Bulgaria that the construction of the Balkan Stream gas pipeline is of essential importance for the development of the two countries and their cooperation and that many people did not fully understand the importance of the project.

– The construction of this pipeline means economic growth for both Bulgaria and Serbia, a growth of the industry, but also the securing of this energy source for our citizens. This is an investment whose results are not immediately visible to everybody, but it is of deep strategic importance for the progress of our states – Vucic said after he visited the construction site of the gas pipeline and the main road from the border to Sofia together with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

Vucic said that he was glad to see that the works were progressing in a quick and quality manner and expressed hope that the gas pipeline would soon connect with Serbia near Zajecar and Nis, through the interconnector which is being built with the support of the European Union.

The transport of gas to Serbia will be fair and transparent, said Borisov after visiting the works on the construction of the Balkan Stream.

When asked by the Bulgarian media what the chances are for the project to be carried out, as the State Department is suspicious of the transfer of Russian gas, Borisov said that he had personally discussed the Balkan Stream with U.S. President Donald Trump and the highest U.S. Officials.

– The project is not called the Balkan Stream for nothing. It begins in Bulgaria and continues all the way to Serbia. It is not a coincidence that we have named this gas hub the Balkan Stream. The EC has also taken this project into account and invested in it – Borisov said.

He said that the Bulgarian government had already received another EUR 6 million for the construction of a gas interconnector to Serbia, which can be used for the transfer of not just the Russian gas, but of the Azerbaijani gas as well.

This will be of great use for the entire region, Borisov pointed out.
