Biometric credit cards to arrive – NatWest starts testing cards with fingerprints

NatWest has initiated a three-month testing of biometric credit cards with fingerprints for around 150 clients.

The bank previously carried out a pilot project with biometric debit cards, but this is the first time that this type of a credit card is issued. Biometric credit cards will offer contactless payments by using fingerprint scanning for transactions of up to 100 pounds, Indikator.ba reports.

The card is charged through a card terminal and when the purchaser displays the card, the green light on it indicates that the fingerprint has been matched.

Georgina Bulkeley, the director of strategy and innovation at NatWest says that, after the successful pilot project of the bank's biometric debit cards, they wanted to further test this technology with credit cards. This is the largest card technology development in the past years. Not only does the absence of codes increase security, it also makes it easier for the clients to pay for goods or services, she says.

NatWest cooperates with MasterCard and the digital security company Gemalto in order to implement the service for users in Great Britain.
