POWERCHINA preparing solution for Belgrade subway – Who are the Chinese giants entrusted with this important project?

The subway seems to be an eternal issue in Belgrade. This means of transport has been talked about for several decades, and the Government of Serbia has recently formed the Task Force for the realization of the Belgrade Subway Construction project, whose task is to prepare acceptable technical, commercial and financial solutions for the realization of this project together with the Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA).

Approved by the State Council, Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) is a wholly state-owned company set up in September 2011 on the basis of 14 provincial/municipal/regional electric power survey and design, engineering and equipment manufacturing enterprises formerly affiliated to Sinohydro Group Ltd., HydroChina Corporation, State Grid Corporation of China and China Southern Power Grid Company Limited.

POWERCHINA is an integrated construction group that provides investment and financing, planning design, engineering construction, equipment manufacturing and operation management for hydraulic and hydropower projects and infrastructure, and its principal businesses include energy and power and construction engineering (including survey, planning, design and project contracting), water ecological environmental governance and development and operation of other resources, real estate development and operation, and the manufacture and lease of related equipment.

In addition, upon the authorization of relevant national ministries/commissions, POWERCHINA also undertakes functions such as national planning and review of hydropower, wind power, solar power and other clean energy and new energy sources.

POWERCHINA achieved the business revenue of 335 billion yuan (USD 52.3 billion) in 2017 with the profit of 13 billion yuan and ranked 190th among Fortune Global 500 in the year of 2016

The company has won 106 national science and technology progress awards, 1,995 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological progress awards, and owns 9,493 patents (of which 1,470 were invention patents).

In late December 2018, the subway construction company was founded by the decision of the City Assembly of Belgrade, and Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic said at the time that the works would cost a total of EUR 3.6 billion, of which EUR 1.3 billion for the first phase.

– Two subway lines are planned, one from Zarkovo and Zeleznik to Mirijevo, but only Karaburma in the first phase, the other from Ustanicka Street to Zemun, with one branch going toward Jurija Gagarina Street. The first line will be 22 kilometers long. In the first phase, the length will amount to 17 kilometers, whereas the second one will be around 20 kilometers long – Vesic said on December 26, 2018.

In the meantime, a plan appeared in the public featuring a third line, which would connect Bezanija blocks with Vozdovac, through the city center and Prokop. The line would also cross Sava at the height of Pariska Street, along Kalemegdan, which the previous plans did not include.

The city previously hired the French company Egis to prepare a feasibility study. This company has been working on preparing the construction of the Belgrade subway for years.
