Due to increasingly frequent misuse of personal data, such as the unique identification number, ID card number or bank account, data on personal appearance and habits, biometric data, phone number, IP address, passwords or frequently visited websites, citizens have an increasing need to protect their data, it is said on the website of the Government of Serbia.
The law considerably improves personal data protection, both in the local legal system and in relation to the export of data to third countries. All personal data of the citizens of Serbia will be protected in an equal manner to the practice in EU member states.
The passing of the new law is also one of Serbia's obligations in the process of joining the EU, but also follows from the fact that the contents of the current law have not been changed considerable for nearly nine years.
Since the law was first passed, information technologies have developed rapidly, which is why there's a need for further protection of the rights of the persons the data refer to.
