According to Mayor of Pirot Vladan Vasic, no landfill in Serbia has such devices, and the city administration seeks to be the most developed one in Serbia.
– The landfill is being expanded as the current waste disposal space can only be used for several years more. We want our landfill to be the best one and to be comparable to European landfills in environmental standards. Furthermore, projects for the secondary separation of waste should be prepared fairly soon, so that the waste brought here is not immediately disposed off, but classified first. Also, the construction of a composting plant for biomass and biowaste is being planned – Vasic says.
He is convinced that this will extend the landfill’s life cycle, and the waste from the Pirot landfill will be taken care of in an environmentally-friendly manner.
The director of the Regional Landfill Pirot, Nebojsa Ivanov, says that, in the first six months, around 15,000 tons of waste and non-hazardous industrial waste from the Pirot District area was brought there and that the landfill offers the lowest price of waste disposal in Serbia.
– The business plan for the current year envisages a profit of around RSD 6 million, and we realized EBITDA of RSD 4 million in the first six months alone. The Regional Landfill Pirot offers the lowest price of municipal waste disposal in Serbia, at 12 to 15 euros per ton – Ivanov points out.
Talking about the new investments, Ivanov emphasizes that the ambition of this public enterprise is to become number one in Serbia in 2018, all through 2020, when it comes to the operations and the establishment of a monitoring system, as well as in harmonizing its activities with the EU norms regarding municipal waste disposal.
– This will be a unique sanitary landfill in Serbia, which will monitor the quality of underground waters online, in real time. Five piezometers will be installed. Also, an automatic hydrometeorology station will be installed by the end of the year. This will allow us to monitor those parameters as well in real time, and the data will be available to the public, the City Administration and everyone interested. Also the Republic Hydrometeorology Service of Serbia will distribute the data to the media through weather forecasts, with Pirot placed on the meteorology map of Serbia – Ivanov points out and adds that the funds for these two investments have been secured.
Landfill put into operation five years ago
The Regional Sanitary Landfill Pirot, one of the biggest landfills in Serbia, was put into operation in March 2013. It serves to dispose of waste from Pirot and another three municipalities of the Pirot District. The total value of the project of the regional landfill covering Pirot, Bela Palanka, Babusnica and Dimitrovgrad was EUR 11 million, and the EU had donated EUR 3.8 million.
The first phase of the construction was funded by the Ministry of Energy, Development and Environmental Protection through the former Eco Fund, the City of Pirot and the European Union.
