After more than a half of a century, the reconstruction of the road from Sremski Karlovci to Banstol near Indjija began on April 23. This is the 6.82-km section of the old Novi Sad road, and the works are worth RSD 238.4 million.

The works are being carried out by Sremput form Ruma and Baumeister from Belgrade, and the deadline period is 150 calendar days.

The works entail full reconstruction, as well as an expansion of the road by a meter, allowing for an acceleration of cargo and passenger traffic.

This is the old Novi Sad road, which was built with concrete slabs, in stages, prior to World War II. On average, more than 5,300 vehicles pass down the road each day, and the number is expected to grow by 20% following the reconstruction.

The road is of great importance nut just as an alternative to the highway, but also for the fact that it connects Indjija, Karlovci, Cortanovci, Iriski Venac and Fruska Gora. Monasteries Krusedol, Velika Remeta and Mala Remeta are also located along this route.

The president of the Provincial Government, Igor Mirovic, says that the Provincial Government has taken over the initiative for the reconstruction of the old road from Belgrade to Novi Sad.

– The traffic route from Banstol to Sremski Karlovci is one of the poorest roads, and the reconstruction of nearly seven kilometers of the first section of this undeveloped road begins today – Mirovic said.

He announced that, parallel to these works, the Provincial Government and the Capital Investments Directorate would start reconstructing the road from Banstol to Hotel Norcev in the direction of Iriski Venac using its own funds and reminded that nearly three kilometers from Iriski Venac to Norcev had been reconstructed in 2017.

As he said, together with this road section, this will make up a large reconstructed traffic ring on Fruska Gora that will be important for tourism and other activities. The reconstruction of both roads will allow for a better connection between the municipalities of Indjija and Irig and provide a safer route to the vacation areas and monasteries of Fruska Gora.

Mirovic cited another four important projects to be realized. The construction of a tunnel on the railway from Belgrade to Novi Sad is in progress in Cortanovci. This year, the preparation of the project documentation for a bicycle lane on this route begins as well. Also, the reconstruction of Grebenski Put through Fruska Gora is in progress, and major works are also planned in Sremski Karlovci.

Vojvodina to get Cyrillic-P-shaped highway

High-speed traffic routes shaped like the Cyrillic letter P are soon to be built in Vojvodina: Ruma-Novi Sad, Novi Sad-Zrenjanin and Zrenjanin-Belgrade, as announced yesterday by Imre Kern, State Secretary at the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure.

The high-speed route from Zrenjanin to Belgrade will be built to the Belgrade neighborhood of Borca.

Kern pointed out that the preparation of the project documentation for the construction of the highway from Novi Sad to Ruma, the so-called Fruska Gora Corridor, is in the late stages of development.

He emphasized that these routes would improve the road infrastructure in Vojvodina, which will be important not just for the traffic, but for tourism and the attracting of new investments as well.
