The drivers at the Public Enterprise Roads of Serbia might soon start driving electric cars. The Roads of Serbia opened a small-value public procurement procedure, looking for a company to prepare a feasibility study of the use of electric official cars in the territory of Belgrade. Depending on the results of the study, it will be known whether the cars of the biggest road company would switch from petrol and diesel to electricity. They will give RSD 1 million, without VAT, for an expert opinion, Novosti reports.

The study should define the amount of investments and the cost-effectiveness, total annual operating expenditures, the expected annual income and the return on investments.

As Novosti reports, the company's rolling stock currently contains 181 official vehicles. The average age of the vehicle is 9.65 years, and the average mileage is 267,000 kilometers. Of the said number of vehicles, 16 are not operational and are located at the parking lot of the old Beograd toll booth at Bubanj Potok and should be written off and sold. Of the functional vehicles, 47 are more than 13 years old and might be written off and sold, but the Roads of Serbia claims that this would hamper the functioning of their services.

– Introducing electric vehicles will give the best possible contribution to a reduction of environmental and workplace pollution by exhaust gases, considering that they are basically treated as zero-pollution vehicles – the Roads of Serbia explains.

– Regarding zero pollution, this doesn't just pertain to exhaust gases, but also to petrol fumes produced in filling the vehicle with gas and in exploitation, as well as to land and waterway pollution by waste oils. Noise pollution in electric vehicles amounts to only 10% of the noise level of internal-combustion vehicles. Global practice shows that investments of this kind are very cost-effective.

The Roads of Serbia believes that the economic advantages of the exploitation of electric vehicles are reflected in the fact that the total expenditure of electric energy, depending of the weight of the vehicle, the engine power and the driving conditions, ranges from half a euro to one euro per 100 kilometers, whereas the maintenance costs are 10 times lower compared to standard vehicles, Novosti reports.

As the enterprise confirmed for eKapija, there have been several companies interested in preparing the feasibility study. The bids were opened on November 1, and the company to prepare the study should be selected within ten days of the opening of the bids, according to the terms of the public invitation. The deadline period for the preparation of the study is 60 days.
