The European Union (EU) has decided to provide an additional EUR 166.4 million of support to Serbia’s process of accession to the EU, and this grant will be available over the next 3-4 years, the EU Delegation to Serbia reported.

The money will be used to stimulate competitiveness and innovations, to support small and medium enterprises, local development, improve the quality of education, finance Serbia’s participation in the EU programs, development of legislative and institutional capacities, harmonization with the EU acquis and accession negotiations.

The aid is also meant for Serbia’s action plans in the fields of rule of law and basic rights, improving border management and migration control and suppressing cross-border crime.

– With more than EUR 3 billion of grants since 2001 and the planned billion euros in the next four years, the EU is by far Serbia’s biggest partner – the report says.

Michael Davenport, Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, stated that the new support to Serbia showed how serious the EU’s intentions were regarding the country’s European future.

– We will continue to support the modernization of Serbia and bring concrete advantages to its citizens – Davenport said.
