The average salary of a British CEO from the FTSE 100 index, which rates the shares of the 100 largest British companies, reached GBP 5.48 million (USD 7.15 million) in 2015, which is an increase from GBP 4.96 million in 2014. This means that the chairmen of the leading British companies are currently earning 140 times more than what their employees earn on average.

The research has also shown that the salaries of CEOs from the FTSE index have increased by 33% since 2010.

The results of this report were published just a few days after the new British Prime Minister, Theresa May, had proposed that extremely high salaries of companies' board members be reduced and that shareholders' decisions on CEO salaries be enforceable.

Theresa May also emphasized that there was an irrational, unhealthy and growing gap between CEO salaries and worker salaries.

The report by the High Pay Centre shows that the largest growth of CEO salaries has been recorded in some of the largest companies. For example, Martin Sorrell, CEO of the world's biggest advertising company, WPP, was the highest paid CEO last year with earnings of over GBP 70 million.
