Construction of new airport runway puts nearly 700 houses in Surcin in danger

Announced construction of new airport runway has been worrying the people of Surcin for a long time because it endangers nearly 700 homes, most of which are not legalized, the daily Novosti reports.

Many houses are situated in the unsecure zone, in the vicinity of the aircraft landing area, and building a new runway would automatically mean their demolition.

Stevan Susa, the president of the Surcin Borough Assembly, says they expect to hear possible solutions that would not endanger either the airport or the citizens of Surcin.

A proposal advocated by the inhabitants of Surcin is to reduce the planned length of airport runway by few hundred meters.

- We sought advice from experts who confirmed that shortening the runway would not jeopardize landings and that such solution would be the best - Mr. Susa points out.
